Innovation in a Makerspace

Innovation in a Makerspace

What if the computer labs or part of the libraries became a Makerspace?

The space could include tools, benches, work stations and floor space for project-based learning, problem-solving and inquiry. I envision the maker space containing iPads, desktop computers, 3-D printers, Legos, hand tools, power tools, building materials, sewing machines, art supplies etc.

A Makerspace could be reserved for classroom extension activities or be used for stand alone elective classes.

There would be an immediate impact in Science, Math, Computer Science, Art, Drama and Music across all three divisions. The space could also be utilized for CASE, Summer Programs, Science Olympiad, Robotics.

  1. Yes! In the book Drive by Daniel Pink, research shows that creativity is motivated by 3 things: autonomy, mastery, and purpose. At the end of the book Pink drops a little nugget- in effect stating the findings will have a radical impact on how we should be educating children. The Makers Space idea is an innovative way to provide the space and materials that motivate creativity.

    1. I can't believe I haven't read "Drive" yet. It's the most frequently cited book in professional discussions. Sound like it is right up my ally.

Hey, Academy 3C. Who are you?

      Thanks.

  2. I like this idea! The attached video captured the energy as the kids were driving the project. Like the Outdoor Classroom and Genius Hour, Makers Space is another environment in which the children can unleash their creativity. This seems like a natural extension to classroom learning.

  3. Thanks for being the first to post, Todd. These maker-spaces seem to the be a growing and important trend in schools and in companies these days. I think we may have a resident husband-of-a-middle-school-head who runs one of these in the larger community. He could be a valuable resource if we go this way.

  4. I love this idea and truly I think every classroom should have elements of a maker-space - not just one area of the school. I worry a bit about the impact of TPT (Teachers Pay Teachers) - which sells readily available centers for kids to complete. The artwork is beautiful and it all seems just a bit too "perfect" to me. The kids are busy, I believe student investment and creativity are missing.

  5. First Academy 3C, now 1D Kids, who are you guys? I am digamma 9, the agent from the Operation Lapis, an RPG in Latin.

By the way, Todd, I also love your idea of MAKERSPACE, learning by doing ...
